Best Selling Albums For 1st Half Of 2011
Duo TVXQ has clinched the spot as the best album sellers for the first half of 2011.
According to a list of the best selling albums compiled by some of the major music charts -- Melon, Mnet, and Dosirak -- on July 7th, TVXQ's 5th album "Keep Your Head Down" sold 230,922 copies from January 1st to June 30th. This makes them the highest selling act in k-pop for the earlier half of 2011.
The title track off of the album, "Why", was the first song released by the group in two years. So imagine the high expectation and anticipation for this album. In fact, the follow-up repackage album featuring the songs "Before You Leave" and "Why (repackage)" sold another 55,234 copies putting it in 9th place on the list of best sellers. Tallying up the two, TVXQ sold just shy of 300,000 copies.
Big Bang also had a great year selling 133,951 copies of their highly anticipated fourth mini-album, putting them at 2nd place on the overall list. Their follow-up special edition album featuring "Love Song" and "Stupid Liar" was at 6th place having sold 83,726 copies.
Another popular group that's been establishing their place among the greats of idol groups -- such as TVXQ and Big Bang -- sold 111,201 copies of their first full-length album released last May, "Fiction And Fact", putting them at third place.
Following behind, there was the ever-so-popular Kim Hyun-joong with his first solo album, which saw 100,433 copies be sold at fourth place. CNBLUE was at fifth place with 93,059 copies of their first full-length album "First Step". Another male group, 2PM was at seventh place having sold 67,819 copies of "Hands Up". Finally having some estrogen in the mix, popular girl group f(x) sold 58,419 copies of their first full-length album, placing them at 8th place. Rounding out the top ten, the OST special album for the drama "Secret Garden" was at 10th, having sold 47,373 copies.

SHINee Jonghyun and Sin Se-gyeong spotted dating
Boy band SHINee member Jonghyun and actress Sin Se-gyeong [10Asia]
Popular boy band SHINee member Jonghyun and actress Sin Se-gyeong have been spotted dating by a local media outlet.
Local sports daily Sports Seoul on Wednesday carried a report revealing photographs of the two on a date on October 20 along with confirmations by their agencies that they have romantically involved for about a month now.
In the photos, the couple, strolling at a park near Sin's house in the southern Samsungdong district of Seoul, were seen smiling and talking while Jonghyun had his arm around the actress or holding hands.
The paper also quoted sources close to the couple as saying that the two mostly talk over the phone or text message each other since they are often too busy to meet.
Another source said, "They became close quickly because they have similar thoughts and interests. They also both became stars at a young age which I'm sure has also been difficult for them in certain ways so I think they can talk to each other in this sense as well."
The report explained that the two first met at a concert in May for which Sin was one of the emcees and SHINee performed. They met again by chance at a get-together of a mutual acquaintance.
"I think it's been about a month since they've opened their hearts to each other. I think they're in the process of getting to know each other with fond feelings," an official at Sin's agency Namoo Actors was quoted as saying.
Jonghyun's agency SM Entertainment admitted to the relationship as well, explaining, "I think they've just started [dating each other]. I had heard they had met several times through an acquaintance."
Sin, 20, had garnered much attention when she first debuted at the young age of eight as the model of the poster for hit singer Seo Taeji's "Take 5" album.
After spending a few years off the screen, she then returned with a role in movie "My Little Bride" starring Moon Geung-young and Kim Rae-won in 2004, and played several more acting roles, but shot to stardom last year through MBC smash hit sitcom "High Kick 2."
She is currently promoting her film "Acoustic," an omnibus pic also starring boy band 2AM member Seulong and CNBLUE members Lee Jonghyun and Kang Minhyuk.
Jonghyun, also 20, debuted as the lead vocalist of his five-member band in 2008. SHINee is one of the most popular groups not only in Korea but throughout Asia.
They recently enjoyed a successful return to the music scene with their second repackaged album "Hello" and are readying for their first concert to be held in December in both Korea and Japan.

Twelve Asian Stars to Appear in 'Asia Song Festival'
Star singers including Rain, BoA, 2PM, Lee Seung Chul from Korea, AKB48 from Japan, and Jane Zhang from China will appear in the “Asia Song Festival.”

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said on October 14 that twelve star singers from six Asian countries will appear in the “2010 Asia Song Festival” that will be held at the Seoul Jamsil Olympic Stadium on October 23.
This year’s festival, which is the 7th event, has been entitled “Let’s Go G20 Concert,” and it will be held to commemorate the hosting of the G20 Seoul Summit. This event will be co-hosted by the Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange, Seoul city, and UNICEF, and will be supported by the G20 preparation committee and the Ministry of Culture. Among the Korean singers, the "king of live concerts" Lee Seung Chul, world stars Rain and BoA, ballad group 2AM, and idol groups Kara, 4Minute, and Beast will appear, and singers from other countries such as AKB48 from Japan, Jane Zhang from China, Joe Chang from Taiwan, Bie The Star from Thailand, and Michael Wong from Malaysia will also appear on the stage. As the preliminary event, the showcases of new Asian singers will be presented, and the performances of singers such as “Teen Top,” whom MTV in the US has mentioned as a next generation idol group, star girl group “Rainbow,” female rapper “E.Via,” Kim Yeo Hee, who had appeared in the chorus of “Qualifications of Men,” “Ari Band,” and “Nine Muses” will be showcased.

Actress Han Chae-young Signs With Hollywood?
It's off to Hollywood for actress Han Chae-young! Han's entertainment company BH Entertainment reported on August 11th that the beauty signed with one of the top talent agencies in the US, Creative Artists Agency (CAA).
CAA was founded in 1975 and is the label that some of the top dogs in the US entertainment industry have signed under. This includes director Steven Spielberg, actors Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Nicholas Cage, George Clooney, Will Smith, actress Julia Roberts, TV personality Oprah Winfrey, baseball player Derek Jeter, and soccer player David Beckham. One thing's for sure, Chae will definitely be in good company!
CAA is known to be a well-established company that specializes in backing talents in all sectors of entertainment. There's a lot of anticipation over whether or not the agency will help Han Chae-young succeed in Hollywood as actor Lee Byung-hun did before her. Han is nicknamed "the Korean Barbie doll" for her ideally proportioned figure along with her face that is the perfect fusion of eastern and western beauty. Reports have said that she has been wanting to enter the Hollywood scene. She even joined a New Zealand film project titled "Soulmate", hoping to get her face known outside of Korea's borders. Unfortunately, due to some insider problems, the film never entered the US market.

Lee Hyori: Sexy Pop Diva to TV Comedy Host
After making a successful comeback with her hit song "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", Lee Hyori is set to make another comeback... on the small screen. This time, rather than just starring on a entertainment variety show, she'll be hosting it. She'll be making another transformation from the sexy diva on stage to a funny, outgoing variety show personality.
She received a totally new image after starring on the reality variety program "Family Outing", which she has since left. She'd appear with her face still swollen from waking up, wear no make up, and show off her more tomboyish side. It wasn't in vain as she won an entertainment award for the series with one of her co-stars, Yoo Jae-suk, last year.
Her upcoming project is still in the early planning stages as she's currently in the midst of meeting with a few companies. She will be playing the host role on a variety show starting in the latter half of this year, but it has yet to be decided what kind of show it will be.
The pop diva is currently taking time off after ending her promotions for her first single off of her fourth album. Though there were talks of her continuing with a second single, that doesn't appear to be happening. This is due to Lee's contract with her current company, Mnet Media, approaching it's termination date.

Boy band 2PM gearing up for comeback
Six-member idol group 2PM are in preparations to make a comeback to the local music scene in late April, according to their agency JYP Entertainment on Monday.
"There have been a series of unfortunate events lately such as the sinking of South Korea's naval ship Cheonan but if there aren't any other problems, we hope to release the new album this month," a representative from JYP explained.
"The group will return with a mini-album and are currently rehearsing their dance moves for the stage," continued the rep.
2PM made their debut originally with seven members in 2008 with their first single album "Hottest Time Of The Day."
Leader Jae-beom however, quit the group last September after sparking national controversy over comments he made on his MySpace account before his debut.
Despite a much-anticipated comeback to the band, the former singer parted with his agency for good in February over "a huge personal wrongdoing," according to JYP.
The group had continued their singing career with six members since their leader's departure last year, making a successful return with their first full-length album "1:59PM" in November which featured their title track "Heartbeat."
Members of 2PM have ventured onto individual projects starring in variety programs and appearing in dramas.

Bae Yong-jun, Choi Ji-woo Visit Japan
Korean Wave star Bae Yong-jun has visited Japan, where he was welcomed by some 2000 fans. His visit comes more than a year after his last visit to the country.
Bae left for Japan on September 27 on a special Korean Air jet, which was rented for him. The actor arrived at Narita Airport at 3:20 p.m. He and actress Choi Ji-woo will attend a promotional event for the animation version of "Winter Sonata" at the Tokyo Dome.
Bae previously visited Japan in June last year to promote the epic drama "Legend." It is his first visit to Japan alongside actress Choi Ji-woo, who played opposite him in the TV drama "Winter Sonata."
Korean Air offered a special jet for the two stars. Some 2000 fans greeted Bae and Choi at Narita Airport. Bae's fans kept asking him about his health, as the actor was recently diagnosed with septicemia. Bae responded with a smile and waved his hand. Walking among the crowd of fans, he said briefly that he was fine. Bae's agency, BOF, said the two actors didn't pause to greet their fans because of security concerns.
Bae, Choi and Ryu Seung-soo will attend the "Winter Sonata" event on September 29 at the Tokyo Dome. On September 30, Bae will hold an event marking the publishing of his book on the beauty of Korea. He will stay in Japan until October 2.

2PM member, Nichkhun had a smile that could brighten everything around up. Having him sitting right in front of them with sweet smile, people couldn’t help but to act gleefully along with him.
What kind of person is Nichkhun?
“2PM’s entertainer. Because of my optimistic personality so I try to smile broadly frequently and it seems like I’m a buffer zone between members too.”
How did you become a singer?
“I was walking on the street and unexpectedly got cast in an entertainment agency. I did both performance and acting but nothing was good so I received much maltreatment. I couldn’t dance neither could act. (laughs) The memory of not wanting to take anymore harsh words so, having my teeth clinched, I practiced dancing and singing alone at night is still vivid in my memory. Then I moved to JYP”
Between an actor and a singer, which one is Nichkhun suitable for?
“Probably an actor. But I’m a member of 2PM and working as singer. I’m trying to be born again as more respectable singer.”
I think that my charm is…
“Whatever I do, I do it hard. I won’t be frustrated after receiving wounds and will bravely stand up. What do you call that thing? Right, a tumbling doll.”
Well then weak point?
“Similar to Wooyoung. I often get too serious and I’m a type of keeping my worries to myself only”

“Working on variety shows. Haha”
How to take care of your body?
“Unlike the other members, because I won’t get fat so I’m trying to put on some weight. I even make an effort to eat much and rest well.”

Lotte World opens 'Star Avenue'
Taking a full step toward marketing Korea's most sought-after superstars among overseas fans, Lotte World opened yesterday "Star Avenue," a memorabilia hall that displays all things related to celebrities -- just not the stars themselves.
"We believed that we needed something to appeal to the rising number of tourists to Gangnam (southern Seoul) region," said Choi Hong-hoon, public relations team chief for Lotte World.
The opening ceremony was attended by several of the featured stars and hundreds of their adoring fans.
The Avenue, located on the first underground floor near the South Gate of Lotte World, is divided into five different spaces.
The "Star Showcase" corner exhibits costumes and accessories donated by the stars, along with a star magazine video featuring the latest celebrity news.
Nine stars are featured including Rain, Tong Vfang Xien Qi, Big Bang, Park Yong-ha, Song Seung-heon, Choi Ji-woo, Ji Sung and Kang Ji-hwan, along with Japanese celebrity Ikko.
"Star Center", located at the center of the avenue accommodates a huge, 360 degree, high definition screen which features clips of the celebrities.
"Music Star" hall allows visitors to choose and listen to their favorite songs which they can burn in CD format to take as souvenirs. Fans can also send letters using a touch screen program.
"Drama Star" features recreated film sets of popular drama series such as Daejanggeum and East of Eden, where fans can pose next to life-size models of their favorite stars.
Hours of operation for the Avenue are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The entry fee is 10,000 won although anyone with a Lotte World Adventure "one-for-all" ticket will be able to enter free of charge.
Lotte World in Jamsil-dong of Songpa-gu, which is also home to a hotel, duty-free shop, department store and a musical theater, will celebrate its 20th anniversary on July 12.
When it first opened it was the world's largest indoor theme park. Since then, Lotte World has become a signature amusement destination not only for children, but for adults as well who had eagerly welcomed the opening of the adventure park.
To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Lotte World has organized a number of diverse and exciting events, including a "Lotty's Adventure Parade" featuring 200 brightly-lit, airborne actors and dancers.
On the day of the actual anniversary there will be a special event where 20 couples (who are 20-years-old) will cut a 20-meter-high birthday cake. There will also be a musical, samulnori (Korean farmer's dance), as well as a lucky draw for overseas trips.
Lotte World and its adjacent Magic Island were the first Korean theme park in 1995 to open at night and, since then, have introduced many daring new rides such as the Gyro Drop (1998), Gyro Swing (2001) and the Atlantis ride (2003). Lotte World went through a major renovation in 2007. As a further expansion of the business, Lotte World plans to open a water park in Jangyu, South Gyeongsang Province in 2011 and will also participate in a comprehensive entertainment complex development in Shenyang, China.

Love Is in the Air for Korean Celebrities
The month of June must be the season of love, as Korean celebrities admit their relationships and make a wedding announcement.
Earlier in the week, popular singer Jang Yun-jeong surprised everyone by admitting that she and wacky comedian Roh Hong-cheol were indeed a couple. Then K-pop idol Se7ven confirmed the rumor that he has been seeing actress Park Han-byeol for the past seven years. The whole affair came to light when Se7en wrote a posting entitled “I’ll Tell You Everything” on his mini homepage. The couple first met when they were seniors in high school and has remained very close for over seven years. He said that he didn’t want to make the relationship public, because he wanted to let the affection grow naturally like those of other ordinary couples. But now he’s telling his fans everything to be fair to Park and ask for the blessings of his fans.
Then on Thursday comedian Jung Hyung-don of the “Infinite Challenge” fame said that he’s getting married this fall on September 12th. The bride-to-be is a writer of an MBC variety show and met Jung when they were both working on a show called “The Mystery Commandos.”

Choi Ji-woo in Costume Change Marathon
Choi Ji-woo has had chances to display all her charms in every possible way by showcasing a great number of outfits in 20-episode SBS drama "Star's Lover," which ended Thursday. Choi's stylist said the actress appeared in 147 outfits up to the 12th episode, averaging 12 ensembles per episode. In the second episode alone, she wore 25 different outfits. The industry says it might be the most number of costume changes in Korean TV history, although there is no accurate record to compare.
In the soap, Choi plays the role of a top actress, and is therefore shown in many different dresses. She has featured a range of clothing, from a nun's uniform and delivery man's clothes to vampish leather goods, a ballerina's tutu and fur coats.
"Some people say how lucky I am to wear all these wonderful clothes, but it is not easy task getting changed so frequently." Choi said. "I normally wear comfortable casual clothes, like sportswear, when I am not shooting."

No Longer Just a Pretty Face: Song Seung-hun
Actor Song Seung-hun, who made his name as a gentle, romantic lead in melodramas before he was drafted into the military, has changed. He has come back after a five-year hiatus as a tough guy, playing a man who joins the mafia to avenge his father in MBC drama “East of Eden.” Watching him rage and burn while chasing the man who killed his father on a motorcycle, viewers have praised him for his true-to-life emotional acting. After 14 years in the entertainment world, Song is still mostly recognized for his looks rather than his acting. “I know I’m known thanks to my looks rather than anything else,” he said. “But I no longer care about that.”
Having made his debut as a model for blue jeans in 1995, he rose to stardom overnight with his role in MBC sitcom “Three Guys and Three Girls.” “I started acting unprepared without thinking much about it,” he said. “So I still sometimes feel I’m dreaming when so many fans show their love for me.”
Gently prodded about the scandal surrounding his attempt to dodge the draft, the 32-year-old says, “It was one of the most regrettable things in my life. In the military I often thought about the importance of being humble and taking things as they come.”
But his fans remained loyal -- he got boxes of letters every week, totaling tens of thousands by the time he was discharged after two years.
Song, like Bae Yong-joon, is more popular in Japan than in Korea -- thousands of Japanese fans came to see him when he was discharged. “I’m happy and at the same time it’s a lot of pressure when Japanese fans come to Korea to study because of me,” he says.
Now he tries to think and act simply, taking advice from director Yoon Suk-ho of “Autumn in My Heart”, the drama that made his name in Japan. Yoon “told me that I shouldn’t try to look cool or handsome when I’m acting. The most important thing, he said, is to act sincerely and truthfully. I think I can do that now.”

Lee Yoeng-ae – Hong Kong’s Favorite Star
A survey conducted by The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) that included 1,632 Hong Kong citizens revealed that Hong Kong’s favorite Korean star is Lee Yeong-ae.
According to the results, Lee Yeong-ae received a remarkable 16.1% of the total votes, followed by Song Hye-gyo, who came in close second with 15.9%. Furthermore, the highly acclaimed drama ‘Daejanggeum’ received a staggering 26.7% of the votes, while the movie ‘My Sassy Girl’ came in second with 18.5%. When survey takers were asked about the Hallyu Wave, 90.9% answered that they were aware of what it was. Of those, 49.5% said that they were greatly influenced by the popularity of Korean entertainment, while 38.2% answered that they were somewhat influenced.
When asked about what truly represented Korean tourism, 38.4% of the voters regarded Seoul and Jeju-do Island as the most recognized ‘tourist attractions’, with ‘food’ and ‘Hallyu’ topping the list as well. The most desired tourist highlight in Korea was Jeju-do with 39.5%, followed by Seoul with 33.9%. As for recreational activity, 13.5% replied that they most wanted to discover Korea’s scenic landscapes and natural beauty.
Moreover, 77.4% answered that they had plans to visit Korea someday. An astounding 52.5% plan to visit within a year, and 24.5% within the next 6 months.
KTO Hong Kong Branch Vice President Je Sang-won states, “When asked about the level of interest in movies, dramas, and tourist attractions, the votes showed that 42% answered that they were highly interested. We plan to develop tour packages such as filming location tours with the surveys in mind and combine the Hally Wave popularity along with the charming elements of Korea tourism for local marketing strategies.”
This survey was taken by the Hong Kong public who visited the ‘2008 Hong Kong International Tourism Expo’ in June.

Rain to Return to Music this Fall
Since his entry into the Hollywood movie market, singer and actor Rain has been a busy man. He has finally announced that he will be returning to the music business this September. Rain held an official event with his Japanese fan club, "The Cloud," on June 30th at the Tokyo Dome JCB Hall. He announced at the event that he would return as the "singing Rain" with an album for Asian fans "possibly as soon as September."
At the fan meeting, Rain performed his hit songs, "I Do," "How to Avoid the Sun" and "Instead of Saying Good-bye."
June 25th was Rain's 26th birthday and "The Cloud" fans had prepared a song and cake for him that night, for which Rain graciously thanked them.
"Besides the fan event, Rain will give an interview on the hit Fuji TV program "Cho Nan Kang 2," according to one of Rain's agents. The agent said, "He is also planning on bringing his fans a song in Japanese towards the end of the year."
Rain has been in Berlin, Germany, for the past four months working on the shoot for the Hollywood film "Ninja Assassin." As soon as the filming is finished, the singer and actor is planning to hold a fan event in Korea.source: KBS Global

From Pretty Boy to Action Star: Lee Jun-ki Changes Shape
Guryepo Beach in southwest Taean, the site of the devastating oil spill late last year, is seeing a return of the crowds. It's the location of the SBS drama “Iljimae,” in which Lee Jun-ki (26) plays a man who is transformed from urchin Yongi to the chivalrous Iljimae.
"This chicken meat is so tough, my teeth nearly came out." Lee recites the line sitting in the corner of a seaside hut. In the scene, Iljimae, starving, cooks up a chicken behind his master's back, showing the human side of the valiant fighter. Then, at 9 p.m., the first short break after filming since the afternoon.
"I asked the director when I would finally get to shoot the action scenes which the viewers will be dying to see. But I'm still not flying about," says Lee. Iljimae's stunts were withheld until the 10th episode. The story centered instead on Yongi's training and his double life, which all serve to avenge his fathers' death. He was portrayed as a loose, comic character.
Lee became a star overnight in 2006 in the film “The King and the Clown” in which he played a man in woman's disguise. Now he wants to prove himself in an action role. "I shook off the memory of ‘The King and the Clown’ while doing the TV drama ‘Time Between Dog and Wolf’ last year. A comic role is a first for me, which is more difficult than being the leading man. I'm coasting on confidence alone."
In the original comic strip, lljimae disguises himself as a courtesan to obtain information from officials. Sounds familiar? But Lee shakes his head saying, "Will the viewers want to see me again dressed as a woman? I don't think so. I don't want to be a 'pretty boy’ again. But I don't know what the producers think.”
His physique is as pretty as his face. He's a taekwondo expert, but his body is far from brawny. "I don't want to be stuck in one shape. An actor's body should be formless, ready to change into any form. I don't like weight training. I like running about outdoors but not lifting heavy equipment in the stuffy indoors. It's not my style."
While filming “Time Between Dog and Wolf” last year, Lee said he has yet to be recognized as an actor. But his confidence has grown. "I believe more and more people are recognizing me as an actor and not just a celebrity."

Bae Yong-joon, Interview in Japan, "I have thoughts of marrying but it's not working out"
On the 1st, after the three-hour "The Legend Premium Event 2008 in Japan" held in Osaka Kyocera Dome, Bae Yong-joon held an interview with Korean reporters for about thirty minutes in the waiting room. Director Kim Jong-hak of "The Legend" was also there. The following are questions and answers that were exchanged.
-Thoughts on the event held today, with 35000 fans?
-Even in the disappointment that came with the end of filming, Director Kim and I said that it was over yet. But now, I have a real feeling that it's over. It was nice today.
